The Prologue

Up until 2025, NoSo had been sourcing standard unbranded paper mailers for shipping patches to customers across North America (and even across the world!). We’ve always operated with a sustainability forward mindset: our past mailers were made with recycled content and free of plastics or harsh inks and chemicals. But they were plain. They had no style! And what’s the point of striving for sustainability if you can’t do it in style? We knew there was something better out there for us. Enter, EcoEnclose.

Sustainability with Style

Just like how NoSo is on a mission to patch the planet, EcoEnclose is on a mission to transition packaging solutions across the nation using the most sustainable innovations in the industry. From mailing envelopes printed with algae ink™ to poly bags made with seaweed, EcoEnclose is leading the sustainability charge.

EcoEnclose has been partnering with brands across the outdoor and fashion industries for many years, so it only made sense to team up when it came time. Our EcoAlly delivered what we can only describe as the coolest packaging to ever grace our customers’ hands! And while the design features home baked imagery of NoSo’s friends and Jackson Wyoming motifs, their sustainability is more than impressive! These new mailers are:

  • Made from 100% Recycled Content
  • Made from at least 70% Post-Consumer Waste
  • Plastic-Free and Curbside Recyclable
  • Made in the USA
  • Printed with Sustainable Ink

The high recycled content and recyclability of these mailers make them an excellent example of circularity in motion. When we can keep materials in use, finding their way back into people’s hands, just like patched and repaired gear and clothing, then we can (momentarily) rest our laurels on a big sustainability win.

Unique innovations: Algae Ink™

When we approached EcoEnclose about this project we wanted to learn of all the ways we could develop the most sustainable mailer possible. One particular innovation piqued our interest: ink made from algae!

A close ally and production partner of EcoEnclose is Living Ink Technologies. This company is on a mission to “make black materials ‘greener’”. They do this by shifting the pigments used in printing ink away from petroleum-based feedstock to bio-based feedstock made from US-farmed algae waste, diverted away from landfills. This makes for a more sustainable printing ink that EcoEnclose can use on packaging solutions, like our mailers! Here are some of the stats coming from Living Ink and their Algae Black™ pigment when compared to conventional carbon black:

  • Made from 100% renewable algae waste feedstock
  • Reduces carbon emissions by 200%
  • Reduces petroleum feedstock by 100%
  • Reduces water consumption in the production process by 98%

When we set out to create these new mailers, we had no idea we’d be stumbling into one of the cooler innovations in sustainability we’ve seen in a while. We’re incredibly excited to have the opportunity to incorporate this beautifully renewable resource into our product journey!
